Summary
A preclinical scientist with over 20
years of in vivo pharmacological experience in the biopharmaceutical
industry. Strong reputation for leading preclinical studies from
first-in-class to best-in-drug medicines for unmet medical needs.
Especially adept at: In vivo cardiovascular models Surgical expertise
Team building Protocol/Scientific writing Basic and advanced laboratory
training Product Development Skilled in training and mentoring
laboratory staff to achieve project goals and compliance.
Professional Experience
Theravance,
Inc., South San Francisco, CA 1999 to Present
Scientist, Pharmacology Department
Organized a cardiovascular laboratory
to evaluate the preclinical safety and hemodynamic profiles of
asthma, overactive bladder, anti-infective and antihypertensive
drug candidates. Championed an exploratory project, which is currently
in preclinical development. Provided key data, which resulted
into two business partnerships with major pharmaceutical companies.
Championed an exploratory project currently in preclinical
development.
Designed preclinical cardiovascular studies that resulted
into two business partnerships with major pharmaceutical companies;
leading to milestone payments to the company.
Served as a principal investigator in 12 approved protocols.
Monitored an online training module for staff in pharmacology
which led to initiation of an intranet training website for
the entire department, saving
thousands of dollars in outside training.
Designed and implemented preclinical cardiovascular models
to evaluate standard and novel molecules in asthma, overactive
bladder and hypertension.
Developed and validated rat model of acute decompensated
heart failure; influenced and introduced a new direction to
the critical path for the project.
Implemented safety models, cough and angioedema; instilled
a level of confidence that our molecules would have therapeutic
benefits without the clinical risk.
Applied surgical expertise to developed acute and conscious
models to evaluate bladder function.
Monitored new advances in data acquisition, physiological
monitoring and technological advances for the laboratory; provided
recommendations that increased laboratory throughput and reduced
research cost by thousands of dollars.
Designed training workshops for staff professional development
which enhanced and shortened the learning curve.
Coached and provided ongoing question-and-answer to pharmacology
staff on surgical and cardiovascular techniques.
Genentech,
Inc, South San Francisco, CA 1990 to 1999
Senior Research Associate, Cardiovascular Department
Developed and implemented a model system, using a gamma
camera to visualize the thrombolysis of a radioactively-labeled
blood clot and for the study of embolic stroke. Designed models
of stroke to study therapeutic intervention and neuroprotection.
Designed and implemented a model to study intestinal ischemia/reperfusion
injury; provided an exploratory alternative to the Second Generation
Thrombolytic Team.
Introduced and validated in vivo models to study embolic
stroke; established collaboration with an academic laboratory
to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of thrombolytics in stroke
patients.
Designed an in vivo model to investigate therapeutic intervention
in ischemic stroke using a gamma camera imaging technique; explored
the dose-response relationship of injected thrombolytics for
the first time.
Characterized the pathophysiology of focal ischemia using
MRI; improved the process of investigating therapeutic intervention.
Served as a member of the IACUC Committee for four years;
guided the approval process of research protocols to achieve
project goals and to comply with USDA regulations.
